The Moving Communities social value dashboard has been updated to enable more powerful reporting around the value of participation in physical activity.

One of the changes is the addition of the Wellby methodology (WELLBY) that quantifies an individual’s subjective wellbeing on a score from 0 to 10, in response to the question: “Overall, how satisfied are you with your life nowadays.”

As well as the inclusion of Wellby, the new model includes updated health outcomes; the social cost of inequalities value; the most recently available evidence and the latest guidance for measuring and valuing social impact from the UK government's HM Treasury.

Jack Shakespeare, director of strategic projects at 4Global spoke to HCM about the impact, saying: “The updated Moving Communities Social Value dashboard marks a step-change in how we measure the impact of sport and physical activity. By aligning with HM Treasury’s Green Book guidance and the 2024 national social value model published by Sport England, this version offers a more focused and rigorous approach to valuing outcomes.

“For the first time, we clearly distinguish between the primary value to individuals – particularly through improved wellbeing – and the secondary value to society, including reduced health and social care costs.

“By integrating the Wellby Standard (Wellbeing-Adjusted life year) as a core measure that's aligned with the NHS QALY (Quality-Adjusted life year), we’re bringing greater credibility and consistency to how social value is quantified. This allows us to make more informed decisions about where policy, planning and investment delivers the greatest return in public health and wellbeing.”
