NEC development work moves forward
The NEC Group, which manages the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), has announced the name of its proposed £90m leisure and entertainment complex.
The Resorts World @ The NEC, is set to open in 2012 pending the approval of a casino licence by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. The complex is a joint partnership between The NEC Group and UK casino operator Genting Stanley (Solihull), which is owned by Malaysia-based Genting International.
The details of the development are still being refined but as well as a casino, which is expected to comprise less than 10 per cent of the development, there will be a four-star hotel, a spa, bars, restaurants and conference facilities.
Paul Thandi, chief executive of The NEC Group, said: "The resort will support our vision for Destination NEC offering a work, rest and play environment for all our customers and allowing us to compete with venues across the world."
The development is the first phase of a masterplan for the National Exhibition Centre site, which will deliver a range of business and leisure facilities to compliment the existing exhibition halls and arena.
Construction work has also begun on the refurbishment of the former NEC Arena, having been officially rebranded LG Arena 1 September, following a £28m sponsorship deal with electronics firm LG.
The venue will receive new seating, bars, restaurants and improved backstage areas.
Phil Mead, managing director of the NEC Group Arenas, said: "Our capacity will be increased by around 2,000 for the benefit of promoters and major selling acts but also the flexible seating and draping systems will provide more intimate theater-style configurations."
Mark Pearce, corporate director of economic regeneration, at Advantage West Midlands, added: "The programme will deliver an arena that raises the profile of Birmingham in target markets, underpins event-related economic impact, protects and grows the region's major events programme, and provides an enhanced entertainment experience for visitors."
