National Restaurant Week
The Restaurant Association is running the second annual National Restaurant Week from May 10 to 20 to encourage UK consumers to 'Go Eat!'
In 2001, more than 1,000 Restaurant Association members took part, and this year the aim is to double the numbers by opening it to non-members.
'With foot and mouth and September 11 behind us, we are looking forward to trading improvements for the tourism and leisure industry,' said Restaurant Association chief, Ian McKerrcher. 'National Restaurant Week 2002 is part of the Restaurant Association's contribution to this revival.'
To promote the event, the Daily Express will be printing two-for-one meal deal tokens for participating restaurants, and there will be adverts showing on tv. The fundraising target for the week is £50,000, which will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Relief. Customers are being asked to donate £1 per head, while restaurateurs are being encouraged to match customers' donations.
A survey, commissioned by the events' sponsors, American Express, reported that Britons spend more than £20bn on eating out each year. It is hoped National Restaurant Week will further publicise the industry, and help it to overcome the difficulties of last year.
It is free for restaurateurs to take part in the event, but they must run an event or promotion during the week and market it as part of the Go Eat! National Restaurant Week. A marketing pack is available from the Restaurant Association. Details: +44 (0)20 7831 8727; or email [email protected]
