New country park for former colliery site
Wakefield Council has announced that work is nearing completion on a project to transform the former Royston Drift Mine colliery into a new country park.
The new Rabbit Ings Country Park will be located between the communities of Ryhill, South Hiendley and Havercroft in Wakefield and Shafton and Royston in Barnsley. Work has included the planting of around 36,000 trees and shrubs and the creation of 8.6km (5.3 miles) of footpaths and cycleways as part of the £7.5m scheme.
Yorkshire Forward in partnership with Wakefield Council have delivered the project, with the funding support of the National Coalfields Programme. Wakefield Council deputy leader Denise Jeffrey said: "We now hope that communities around the park will be able to make good use of the new open spaces."
