New plans for King’s Cross Central
Amended plans have been revealed for the 67 acres (742,000sq m, 7,986,821sq ft) of land between the King’s Cross and St Pancras railway stations in central London.
The King’s Cross Central redevelopment – part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link currently being constructed at King’s Cross – would take around 15 years to complete and potentially employ up to 30,000 people.
Developer Argent first submitted plans to Camden and Islington Council in May this year but they were criticised for not including enough housing or public spaces. Final amended plans were resubmitted to the council on 28 September.
Amendments include the creation of 800 bicycle spaces alongside increased landscaping.
Other changes include the site being able to accommodate trams, if Mayor Ken Livingstone’s Cross River Tram scheme goes ahead.
More than 20 historic buildings – including four listed Victorian gasholder frames – would be redeveloped into flats with the creation of 20 major public routes and 10 new open spaces. Sports facilities including a swimming pool are also proposed.
Chief executive of Argent, Roger Madelin, said: “Our objective has always been to deliver an exciting and successful mixed-use development that will shape a dense, vibrant and distinctive urban quarter.” Details: www.argentkingscross.com
