Greenwich Leisure (GLL) has teamed up with Thames Water and Olympian Steve Parry to launch a new programme of events designed to introduce London’s children to Olympic watersports.

Oceans of Fun will give hundreds of youngsters the opportunity to try out swimming, water polo, diving and synchronised swimming in Newham, Hammersmith, Fulham, Waltham Forest and Tower Hamlets.

Olympic Medallist Steve Parry said: “Oceans of Fun is run by Olympians and we are delighted to have received the support of GLL, Thames Water and London Swimming to make this a truly inclusive community project.”

“The emphasis of all our events is on fun, and by exposing kids to strong role models we aim to inspire them to follow their dreams. The events are open to anyone aged between eight and 12 and we hope to attract hundreds of children from each of the communities that we are visiting.”

“Hosting the 2012 Olympic Games will undoubtedly have a massive impact on the next generation of young hopefuls. We are trying to get them excited now so that some of them might be in the frame for success in 2016 and beyond. The emphasis, though, is fun, health and a memorable day at the pool.”

Andrew Clark, GLL’s swimming development manager added: “We are delighted to be managing the Oceans of Fun programme and to have the support of the London Boroughs of Waltham Forest, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hammersmith & Fulham.

“We, along with the ASA London region and our local authority partners, are keen to increase the opportunities available to young people, not only in mainstream swimming but also growing awareness of other Olympic aquatic sports, fitness and water safety.

“This project has also helped fund a training programme for our swimming teachers to ensure that the multi-aquatic activities continue as a legacy of the events." Details: email [email protected]
