'Olympic cities' gaining in popularity
New research compiled by national tourism agency VisitBritain has found that cities hosting events during the 2012 Games are gaining in popularity as tourist destinations.
Towns and cities such as Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and Windsor, which will host events during the Games, all feature on the top 20 most popular destinations for 2010.
London and Edinburgh remain the two most appealing destinations for inbound tourists, but VisitBritain said the analysis shows many regional towns are also benefiting from tourism.
VisitBritain strategy and communications director Patricia Yates said: "It is clear that next year presents us with some real opportunities to showcase Britain to new audiences around the world.
"Our GREAT campaign will be launching in key global cities, raising the aspiration to travel to Britain and backed up by GREAT offers from our commercial partners to encourage visitors to come now."
