Orangetheory Fitness has opened its 100th franchised site in Canada, seven years after it first entered the country.

The latest opening in the city of Vancouver is owned and operated on a franchise-basis by former Vancouver Canucks ice hockey star Trevor Linden and his ownership group.

With the opening, Canada has become the first country – outside of the US – to reach the 100 studio landmark.

"We are incredibly proud to reach this milestone so quickly," said Blake Macdonald, President, Orangetheory Fitness Canada.

"Opening 100 studios in less than seven years makes us the fastest growing fitness brand in Canada which is a testament to Canadian fitness interests and our unique trifecta of science, coaching and technology."

Orangetheory expects to finish 2019 with 106 total studios in Canada – which means it will have opened 22 new studios since the end of 2018, representing a 26 per cent year-over-year growth rate.

The company is also ramping up its European expansion plans.

Final touches are being added to a studio in Derby, UK, which is scheduled to open in October 2019.

It will be the second Orangetheory to be located outside capital city London and follows the opening of a studio in Altrincham, near Manchester.

It will be operated by Wellcomm Health and Fitness – a company set up to run Orangetheory sites under franchise in the north of England.

Wellcomm has signed a master franchise deal for the North and Midlands – covering an area from Buckinghamshire to Northumberland – with plans to launch a total of 40 studios by 2028.

Orangetheory has ambitious growth plans for the UK market and has signed two master deals – for a total of 110 franchised sites – covering all of England.

Earlier this year, Orangetheory Fitness recorded more than US$1bn (€875m, £765m) in system-wide revenues during 2018 – a record for the franchise-based operator.

The company – which offers 60-minute HIIT sessions featuring five different exercise zones – has grown rapidly since its launch in 2010 and currently has 1,200 studios in 23 countries. It also has more than 500 studios in the development pipeline.
