Plans for the £75m redevelopment of the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston, near Edinburgh, have been unveiled by the Royal Highland Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS).

A new 6,000-seat indoor arena, a new MacRobert Pavilion, a 180-bed, four-star hotel and a new centre of food excellence form part of the scheme, as well as a new hall and a 70-bed extension of the existing Quality Hotel. The venue, which has been home to RHASS for 50 years, had been due to relocate to a new 145-hectare (358.3-acre) site at Norton Park by 2013 in order to allow the wider expansion of Edinburgh Airport to go ahead.

However, the BAA-owned airport put its redevelopment plans on hold in September 2008 after it said that the anticipated £350m cost of relocating the Royal Highland Centre would place too great a financial burden on airlines operating out of the airport. RHASS chief executive Ray Jones said: "RHASS currently contributes more than £250m to the Scottish economy each year, with more than a million visitors to our site and more than 200 events. With this regeneration and a 6,000-seat indoor arena, we will ensure that Ingliston remains one of the UK's premier events venues for the next 20 years."

"We are working with the airport to secure a 20-year timeframe before moving to Norton Park. The development is key for the west of Edinburgh and Scotland, and our Norton Park site could see the society double its contribution to the Scottish economy to £500m." The plans have already been put on show at this year's Royal Highland Show, which was held between 25-28 June.
