Report reveals North East heritage benefits
The North East Historic Environment Forum has published a new report which highlights the contribution that heritage makes to people's lives in north east England.
North East Heritage Counts 2008 outlines the economic, social and environmental benefits that the historic environment has delivered through schemes including restored ancient woodland and after-school clubs in museums. The report also found that around 71 per cent of all adults in the north east region attended at least one historic site in the last year, while nearly all schools used museums and archives to enhance children's learning experience.
Carol Pyrah, chair of the North East Historic Environment Forum, said: "This report celebrates the region's heritage and its contribution to regional life, which extends far beyond providing visits to museums and historic sites. "From community projects designed to inspire and increase confidence, to work with schools and opportunities for life-long learning, the historic environment is an important force in the local community."
The north east report forms part of the national Heritage Counts 2008 report, compiled by English Heritage to provide a comprehensive overview of heritage in England.
