Report to consider future of Inverclyde recreation centre
Inverclyde Council has launched a report into the future of Ravenscraig Sports Centre, currently due to close in March 2014.
The council met on 14 February to consider a number of cost-cutting measures for its three-year budget including the closure of the sports facility, which the council was told is under used and in need of significant investment.
But council leader Stephen McCabe said the proposal to shut the centre - run by Inverclyde Leisure - had been met with criticism and the council needed to make a more considered decision on its future.
He revealed via his blog he had requested the council chief executive John Mundell have a detailed report prepared on the facility to identify potential savings or income generation.
The council has reduced its three-year budget gap from £15m to £4.4m since the beginning of the year but said more savings needed to be made.
Other cost-cutting measures being considered include charges for meals on wheels, replacement of early childhood teachers with care officers, reduced grants for voluntary organisations and reduced opening hours at the recycling centre.
