Robert Gordon University's new centre up and running
The Robert Gordon University has officially opened RGU: SPORT – a new £11m sports centre on its Garthdee campus on the outskirts of Aberdeen city centre.
RGU: SPORT features two gyms equipped with over 70 stations, a six-lane 25m pool, 11m climbing wall with separate bouldering room, nine badminton court sports hall designed for indoor hockey and three exercise studios.
The centre was funded primarily by the university – using proceeds from the sale of its Kepplestone site for residential development – with further contributions totalling around £1.7m, including £500,000 from Aberdeen Council.
The centre provides a focal point for the campus, with a glazed street promenade linking to other university buildings.
While students will be the primary users, the local community will also benefit, said director of sport, Filippo Antoniazzi: “It’s fantastic to have this facility open for business. We hope that the local community will come down in force to see for themselves.”
