Robin Hood returns profits to charity
The UK’s first charity pub, fittingly called The Robin Hood, has been opened in Brighton by millionaire entrepreneur, Martin Webb.
Webb, who plans to open branches of his ‘People’s Pub’ all over the UK if the concept is successful, expects the pub to raise around £50,000 per year for charity and the idea could be extended to include restaurants, cafés and nightclubs.
The pub will be run like any other, except that the entire net profit will be given to local charities, groups or individuals in need.
Where the money goes will be decided quarterly by The People’s Pub Trust and all the pub’s accounts will be posted on the pub noticeboard, so that every patron of the bar knows where his or her money has gone.
A spokesperson for People’s Pubs said: “The idea is to create a great pub right in the heart of the community.”
After selling the C-Side chain of Brighton-based bars and restaurants he founded for a reported £15m in 2001, Webb took a couple of years off to travel the world and investigate alternative ways of doing business.
Webb said: “I thought about giving a lump sum to charity as a one-off when I sold my business, but by setting up People’s Pubs, I can help out every year, just by using the experience I’ve built up over my career.”
He added: “Pubs have always been the focal point of the community. By setting up People’s Pubs, we can focus on dealing with some of the problems that surround us. I think people will like the idea of drinking for the common good!”
