STR: 'Strong' tourism demand for Bahrain
New figures published by STR Global have shown a "strong rebound" in Bahrain's hotel industry, despite local unrest that overshadowed last month's Formula One Grand Prix.
The latest data showed occupancy rates in the country more than double during March this year, with RevPAR increasing by 143.1 per cent compared with March 2011.
STR Global managing director Elizabeth Randall said the industry in the Middle East and Gulf region is improving, despite pressure on room rates in Northern Africa.
Randall said: "In other parts of the region, signs of stabilisation can be seen in the strong RevPAR improvements in Bahrain, Lebanon and Jordan."
The reported growth in Bahrain's hospitality industry come amid continued concerns over anti-government protests and the country's human rights situation.
Amnesty International Middle East and North Africa deputy director Hasiba Hadj Sahraoui said: "The Grand Prix has come and gone but for the people of Bahrain the media spotlight has moved on while Bahrain's authorities have yet to turn the corner on the human rights situation in the country."
