Scenic railway back on track
Luna Park Melbourne's Great Scenic Railway, one of the oldest rollercoasters in the world, is back in action after completing restoration works.
The classic wooden coaster, which was recently voted in the top eight roller coasters in the world by the American Coaster Enthusiast club, was built in 1911 and is the only one of its kind in Australia.
The restoration included work on the cable car system and rebuilding a significant section of track. The station platform has also been overhauled with a 60sq m painting by artist Mark Ogge.
Luna Park's executive director Mary Stuart said: "The Scenic Railway is a fantastic treasure.
"All who ride in the wonderful carved carriages and are transported to the heights of the Famous Face to then soar through dips sand bends of Melbourne's very special rollercoaster are completely enthralled.
"We love the Scenic and we love hearing its very own sound as it roars clackity-clack around the track. It is simply so special - there is nothing else like it and Melbourne is so lucky to have such a treasure."
