Shepperton gets new outdoor gym
New outdoor gym equipment, specifically designed for older people, has been installed at Shepperton Recreation Ground in Surrey.
The £7,500 project was funded by Spelthorne Borough Council, which has provided five machines designed to offer a range of activities, and gentle exercise for different parts of the body. Equipment installed at the site, which is free for anyone to use, includes a ski-stepper, to train shoulder and leg muscles, 'power push' for arms and chest, and a rowing machine.
Vivienne Leighton, the council's portfolio holder for health and independent living, said: "The outdoor gym is an ingenious idea, and provides an excellent way for older people to get some gentle exercise without having to subject themselves to anything too rigourous. "It is as important for older people to keep fit and supple as it is for young ones."
Spelthorne Borough Council was approached to introduce the equipment after users of Shepperton's Greeno Centre got the idea from a similar scheme in Manchester.
