Sofitel Luxury Hotels, part of the France-based Accor Group, has announced the launch of the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan in Egypt, following a three-year renovation.

The property, which is located on the banks of the Nile River, is housed in a building dating back to 1899 and has hosted guests such as Sir Winston Churchill since it initially opened.

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan is divided into two sections: the 62-bedroom Nile Wing and the 76-bedroom Palace Wing. Facilities include the 1,200sq m (12,197sq ft) So Spa.

The spa comprises six treatment rooms; a sauna; a hammam; and an indoor pool. Products used include Nefertari; Jeanne Habashi; Cinq Mondes; Hermès; and Guerlain.

Elsewhere at the property is the 1902 dining experience among the four restaurants and four bars. Interior designer Sybille de Margerie worked on the revitalisation of the hotel.

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan is the third Legend-branded property to open, following Hanoi, Vietnam (July 2009) and Amsterdam, Netherlands (July 2011).

A spokesperson said: "Highlighting iconic, historical properties throughout the world, Sofitel Legends blend French roots with the local culture of each property."
