Spa operators discuss formation of new federation

Spa operators from Europe, Africa and the Middle East are gathering for a forum in May to discuss the formation of a spa association to replace ISPA Europe.

The association has been provisionally called The Spa Federation and the forum is backed by many ISPA Europe members who have raised concerns over ISPA's decision to close its European and Asia Pacific chapters.

Jonathon Stapleton, general manager of the Old Course Hotel and Spa, in Scotland, said: 'The closure is a backwards step. It's naïve to think an association domiciled in America can be truly international simply by having European representatives on its board. As time goes on it will be very difficult for anyone who remains a member in Asia and Europe to feel they are being effectively considered.'

Carena Billetun, ex-president of ISPA Europe, said: 'We recognise the need for a spa industry association focused on Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

'The idea is to build on all the good work ISPA Europe achieved, so we can develop a strong closeness between the different countries that can be consolidated into a representative international body.'

The forum will discuss what the association's vision and mission will be, as well as also planning an international spa congress in Stockholm in September - at which the new association will be launched.

Information on the congress and membership details will be available following the forum in May.
