We need to work together to put sport and physical activity front and centre when designing solutions for public health issues
– Emma Boggis

A piece of work which offers sport and physical activity bodies advice on engaging with public health organisations has been published by the Sport and Recreation Alliance and ukactive.

Physical Activity and Health: Working Together to get the Nation Moving includes top tips from Public Health England and Sport England on how to connect and liaise with organisations in the health sector.

There is also a summary on the health service commissioning process as the two organisations lay out collaboration opportunities following the publication of the government sport strategy – Sporting Future – which encourages joined-up working between sport, physical activity and health.

The report sets out the “key role” the sport and physical activity sector has to play in tackling poor physical and mental health.

Emma Boggis, Alliance chief executive, said the document “demonstrates how sport, recreation and the physical activity sector, working in partnership with health professionals, can play a key role in tackling inactivity”.

“We need to build on positive developments, such as the government sport strategy which sets physical and mental wellbeing as key outcomes, and work together to put sport and physical activity front and centre when designing solutions for the major public health issues we face,” she said.

Steven Ward, executive director at ukactive, added: “Over recent years there has been a fundamental shift in the priorities of local and central government towards highlighting health outcomes of the work that we do, so it is essential that we support each other and our members to work effectively with this sector to get the best results possible.”
