Sporting boost for Seattle
Seattle could soon be on the hunt for a new basketball and hockey team, following the news that Seattle City Council have approved an arena proposal.
The US$490m (£300m, 380m euro) arena is the brainchild of wealthy hedge fund manager, Chris Hansen. Other funds will need to come from the council and futher private and public sector partners. The financial agreement now has to go to King City Council for ratification before arena plans can progress further.
The city was devastated by the departure of its basketball team, the SuperSonics, in 2008 and hopes this arena might lure them back. Seattle hasn't had a professional hockey team since 1924.
"This agreement makes an exciting day in Seattle, as we take a big step towards bringing back the Sonics. This is a great deal for the city, the council, basketball fans and non fans alike," said council member, Mike O'Brien.
