Sports centre unveiled in Selsey
A new £2m sports hall has been unveiled at Manhood Community College in Selsey, West Sussex.
Built partly on the school’s sports field, the new facility comprises an indoor four-court sports hall with changing rooms, reception, first aid and community areas.
Outdoor facilities include a multi-use games area with a floodlit artificial pitch suitable for tennis and football and a smaller area equipped with five-a-side goals.
Community sports groups can hire the sports hall outwith normal school hours.
“We are very pleased with the new sports hall and grateful to Chichester District Council and West Sussex County Council for the funding to build these wonderful facilities for our students and the local community to use,” said executive headteacher, Mark Vickers.
“Manhood Community College has already been awarded the Sportsmark and Health Schools status and these facilities will help to enhance the sports provision at the college.”
West Sussex County Council (WSCC) contributed 50 per cent of the total cost while Chichester District Council (CDC) provided £1m towards the project. The school also made a cash injection.
Cllr Melva Bateman said: “Now we have state-of-the-art sports facilities. Local groups have been vying to get something like this to be built. I am thrilled with it.”
Construction of the sports hall by Birdham-based contractors W. Stirlands started in February 2008. The nine-month project was managed by RLF (Brighton).
