University of Bath has reopened the high performance gym at its Sports Training Village, following a redevelopment which included the installation of new equipment by Matrix.

The new kit now available at the gym includes Matrix’s S-Drive Performance Trainer, Aura strength products, 7xi generation machines and Climbmills.

First opened in 2011, the Performance Gym is a £100,000 extension to the Team Bath Gym designed solely for performance athletes based at the Sports Training Village.

The Performance Gym was funded through a partnership between the University of Bath, the English Institute of Sport (EIS), Sport England, UK Sport and the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).

The gym has been specifically designed to meet the needs of individuals and groups of athletes on world class performance programmes.

Facilities at the gym include an integrated testing platform to give in-depth physical analyses of athletes, a video feedback system to assist in the coaching of athletes and an integrated system allowing real-time feedback to be given to athletes on strength and power outputs.

A number of Team GB Olympians use the Sports Training Village as their base – including swimmer Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, who won the silver medal in the 200m individual medley at last month’s Rio 2016 Olympics.

Stephen Baddeley, director of Sport for the University of Bath, said: “The Matrix equipment is fantastic – this is the only place in Europe you will find some of the equipment, it is absolutely at the leading edge of technology, and will be of huge benefit to our students and customers.

“We have a real partnership with Matrix – not only have they supported the gym refurbishment but they are also supporting sporting scholarships for students and the work of our Talent Development Centre.”
