The £7m Thorncliffe Health and Leisure Centre in High Green, Sheffield is set to include specialist health and research facilities as part of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) when it opens in June.

The Pozzoni Architects-designed site will house facilities including treatment and consultation rooms as part of the government-funded NCSEM Olympic Legacy project.

The facility – to be operated by Places for People Leisure – will also include a 25m (82ft) swimming pool and learner pool, a large health and fitness suite plus training studio spaces. The 60-station gym will contain a variety of Precor CV equipment, as well as resistance stations and free weights from Matrix Fitness.

Funded by Sheffield City Council, Sport England, NCSEM and Ecclesfield Parish Council, Thorncliffe Health and Leisure Centr will provide exercise facilities to a wide range of stakeholders. As well as its links with the NCSEM, the centre will also be used by NHS patients.

“Using exercise as part of a patient’s recovery and rehabilitation as well as using it to prevent ill health has been proven to have significant benefits,” said Sir Andrew Cash, CEO of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

“Sheffield will be looking to take advantage of this through the new National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine and the fantastic facilities here at Thorncliffe.”
