Retreat operator Datu Wellness will host Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche, a Tibetan Lama, Buddhist master and Tibetan medicine scholar, between 3-5 April.

Rinpoche will teach healing practices from the East in this Western setting: Datu’s 17th-century palazzo in Salerno, Italy, overlooking the Amalfi Coast.

He was trained from a young age in yogic and meditative practices within the monasteries of Tibet and India. At 13, he was recognised as the eighth incarnation of the spiritual teacher and Buddhist Lama, Nyentse Tulku.

Rinpoche will teach two practices during his residency: guided Tummo Fire Breath and Dzogchen meditation.

Tummo Fire Breath is a practice designed to generate “inner fire”, boost metabolism, increase energy and cultivate mental focus. It starts with an inner heat meditation and is followed by a combination of diaphragmatic breathing, visualisation of a red or white flame at the navel or root chakra. The experience incorporates holding the breath and moving the body.

This Tibetan technique is often cited as the inspiration for the popularised Wim Hof Method.

During the Dzogchen meditation, Rinpoche will guide participants as they experience their own minds’ natural state. Without using a specific framework of concepts and techniques, he will encourage guests to see how still the mind can become when thoughts are left alone – without judgement or reaction.

Constantin Bjerke, founder of Datu, told Spa Business: “When I met Rinpoche, his teachings touched me immediately.

“The energy aligned and serendipity did the rest, so inviting him to share this wisdom at Datu felt inevitable,” added Bjerke. “We’re here to guide guests beyond what’s popular back to the original sources of every practice for enhanced wellbeing. Rinpoche’s mastery of Buddhist teachings, in addition to being a Sowa Rigpa physician, beautifully deepens the Eastern healing traditions we’ve offered since the beginning. It’s a rare honour to commune with and learn from a revered, reincarnated Lama. His presence, aura, and charisma touch people on a profoundly human level.”

Rinpoche’s residency will take place during a retreat that runs between 3-10 April. The retreat will also offer sunrise and sunset ceremonies, morning yoga,  silent breakfasts, group activities, consultations, afternoon tea, lunch, dinner and a sleep ritual. There is also free time to reflect, rest, book another treatment or talk with a therapist. Meals are sattvic fusion cuisine.

There are four retreats between the end of March and end of April, each of which starts at £2,600 (US$3,300, €3,040) per person, depending on room rate. This price includes meals, accommodation, five treatments, Ayurvedic consultations, daily group classes and clothing for retreats.
