Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul shortlisted to host 2020 Olympic Games
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has shortlisted three locations - Tokyo, Japan; Istanbul, Turkey; and Madrid, Spain - to host the summer Olympic Games in 2020.
Two other cities - Doha (Qatar) and Baku (Azerbaijan) - were also among the five applicant cities, but lost out in the race to be named candidate cities following a technical assessment.
All three shortlisted cities will now prepare a candidature file with an in-depth description of their "Olympic project". The 2020 Games host will be chosen in September 2013.
Following the announcement, Madrid mayor Ana Botella said: "The image of Madrid and Spain will be reinforced with the result of a generation of wealth among all of us."
The Istanbul 2020 bid team tweeted: "[The announcement] proved Istanbul is an iconic city and it is proud to be in a race for the 2020 Games with two other world leading cities."
