Travelodge acquires five more hotels
By Caroline Wilkinson
Budget hotel chain Travelodge has acquired five UK-based hotels for £31m, as part of its development strategy to add 4,000 rooms to its estate by the end of 2008.
The hotels, four of which are new builds, are located in Blackpool, Birmingham Perry Barr, Lancaster, Hounslow in London and Cornwall's Newquay.
The hotel in Birmingham Perry Barr is part of a mixed-use development, led by Hinton Properties, on a 14-acre site at Tameside Park. It will also include space for a pub, restaurant and ten all-weather football pitches.
In Blackpool, Travelodge will operate the redeveloped, grade II-listed Clifton Hotel under a 25-year lease with developers Brook Leisure. The property, is the groups third in the town and will also contain two bars on the ground floor.
All of the new hotels will be operated under Travelodge's 'leasehold model'.
Paul Harvey, Travelodge's property director, said: "Our development pipeline is ambitious and we are on track to meet the target set out in January, to add 4,000 new rooms to our portfolio by the end of the year."
Blackpool and Lancaster hotels will open this December followed by the other sites in 2009.
Travelodge currently operates 337 hotels and intends to grow its estate to 1,000 properties by 2020.
