UK Sport announces 2010 medal targets
Elite performance agency UK Sport has unveiled a target of up to nearly 100 medals across both Olympic and Paralympic sports at competitions throughout the year.
The organisation is aiming to secure between 14-31 medals in Olympic events at World Championship level and a further 53-67 at European or Commonwealth Games level. Paralympic athletes have been set a target of securing up to 99 medals in sports at either World or European-level, with the medal targets set by as part of UK Sport's funding agreement and to ensure progress is being made.
UK Sport chief executive John Steele said: "The targets we have agreed with the sports are challenging but are indicative of the gradual increase in momentum towards London 2012. "On paper, it is impossible to compare with the target of the previous 12 months as there are fewer World Championships in 2010, so the targets include European Championships, Commonwealth Games and World Cups in a number of sports."
