Wetherspoon given recycling award
Pub operator JD Wetherspoon has been named as the High Street Recycling Champion at an annual award ceremony.
The group was awarded the gong for its nationwide recycling initiative by the Letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence.
Centred at its distribution centre in Daventry, Northamptonshire, Wetherspoons recycling scheme involves delivery lorries taking back all the recyclable waste from pubs, resulting in no extra road journeys being made.
Each year, the initiative recycles 1,600 tonnes of used cooking oil, 3,100 tonnes of cardboard, 200 tonnes of paper and 100 tonnes of plastic and aluminium.
As part of the scheme, pub staff have been given training on how to recycle their waste by a number of videos, company communications and a national helpline.
