Work starts on £2m Stoke park overhaul
Stoke-on-Trent City Council (STCC) has announced that work has commenced on a £2m scheme to restore Burslem Park, which is expected to be completed by summer 2012.
A Heritage Lottery Fund grant has contributed towards the cost of the renewal programme, which will include the restoration of the terrace garden and improvements to the pavilion. More than 35,000 new plants will be added to Burslem Park, while an interactive sculpture is to be installed. A woodland walk at Park Road will also be reinstated.
GF Tomlinson has been appointed to carry out the work, with the council announcing that some areas of the park will be fenced off 'where appropriate' to allow for improvements. Lord mayor Denver Tolley said: "The park is such a wonderful facility, and we ask people to bear with us while the works take place. It will be worth it, and will restore the park to how it was intended when it first opened in the 1890s."
