Sport England has announced that £10m worth of National Lottery funding has been made available in the latest round of the Iconic Facilities programme.

The initiative is designed to provide investment in "large scale, state-of-the-art" venues that are capable of accommodating a number of sports and help increase participation.

Iconic Facilities is one of three programmes to run under the 'Places' element of the wider Places People Play programme, which will transform venues across the country.

Applicants can bid for grants of between £250,000 and £3m in the second of three rounds, but will have to show that projects will be "regionally significant" for two or more sports.

Among one of the beneficiaries to have already received Iconic Facilities funding is the new National Indoor BMX Centre, part of the Sportcity development in Manchester.

The £24m venue was designed by Ellis Williams Architects and was opened in August, with facilities designed for both elite and local community use. AFL Architects coordinated delivery of the centre's track.

Sport England chair Richard Lewis said: "This funding is making sure that people who are inspired by the Games will have some really great facilities where they can go and play sport.

"We know that high quality facilities that offer a range of sporting activity can encourage many more people to take part in sport. Without doubt this is a key part of ensuring we deliver a lasting legacy from the Games."
