Work is expected to start on the £20m redevelopment of a multipurpose leisure facility in Bridlington, following plans put forward by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

BAM Construction will be responsible for the build project, as the council seeks to redevelop its ageing Leisure World facility, with the new centre expected to be finished by autumn 2015.

Leisure World closed its doors at 5pm on Sunday 12 January, with the gym, exercise classes and swimming provision transferred to Bridlington Sports Centre.

The new building is to be home to a six-lane, 25m swimming pool, which will be accompanied by a smaller learner pool, a freeform pool with water features, two water slides and swimming spectator seating for 150 people, as well as a modern changing village for users.

The centre will also feature a health suite with a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, showers and foot spa, with guests being able to make the most of expert advice within dedicated health and wellbeing consulting space.

For those looking for gym access, the new Leisure World will house a 70-station fitness studio, an exercise studio, a spinning studio and spaces for dance and yoga classes.

Sports fans are to benefit from a six-court sports hall, two squash courts and a feature climbing wall. The building will also include a café with access for both centre users and non-users.

The design for the new facility will seek to encourage local participation in sport, while also harnessing the seasonal spend of visitors. The centre will link to the area’s seafront and promenade to aid accessibility and sustainability.

“The redevelopment of Leisure World forms part of the council’s £123 million capital investment programme for 2014-15 and highlights this authority’s commitment to providing residents in Bridlington with state-of-the-art facilities for years to come,” said Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

“The building of a new leisure facility will provide a timely boost to the local economy and safeguard jobs in the construction industry as well as providing Bridlington’s residents with a facility that will be at the forefront of leisure venues in the country.”

The council has also struck a deal with Sport England and Total Swimming, which has seen the installation of an Olympic Legacy Pool at its Bridlington Sports Centre facility.
