£26.7m boost for Merthyr Tydfil revamp
Plans for the transformation of Merthyr Tydfil and villages across the Taff Bargoed valley have been handed a £26.7m boost from the Welsh Assembly Government.
The funding has been provided through the European Regional Development Fund; the Targeted Match Fund and the Heads of the Valleys Programme. Investment will be directed towards schemes designed to attract more people into the Merthyr Tydfil, while helping the villages of Bedlinog, Treharris and Trelewis to promote mining heritage.
Improvements for Merthyr Tydfil will include the development of a new public square and an upgrade of the River Taff Corridor. Key gateways will also be enhanced. Welsh deputy minister for regeneration Jocelyn Davies said: "Improving the environment in which people live and work will increase the economic potential of the area - attracting investment and stimulating employment opportunities."
