£750k boost for Cheltenham museum plans
A multi-million pound scheme to transform Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum has been successful in its bid to secure £750,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC) said the decision means that the redevelopment of the attraction can now move forward in a bid to provide additional galleries. New open access stores/study facilities; dedicated spaces for lifelong learning; and a larger events/performance space are proposed as part of the scheme.
Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum is scheduled to close to the public on 1 April as part of the refurbishment, with contractors due to move on site at the end of June. It is hoped the new building will be open by early 2013 at the latest.
CBC cabinet member for sport and culture Andrew McKinlay said: "This huge redevelopment scheme will create a 'first stop' for visitors to Cheltenham with the re-location of the Tourist Information Centre in the new building."
