The founding director of Queensland Academy of Sport in Australia and manager of the Elite Sports Programme at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, Shakespear was appointed for her track record in elite sport as well as her experience as coach, competitor and teacher. Shakspear was also awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1992 for services to sport.
Chairman of EIS, Steve Cram welcomed the appointment: Our aim is to provide the best services possible for our athletes and we have made an excellent start in recruiting Wilma Shakespear.
