£20m redevelopment at Loch Ness castle

The Aldourie Castle estate on the bank of Scotland’s Loch Ness is being redeveloped by an American company with the aim of turning the site into an exclusive holiday retreat, reports the North Scotland Press and Journal.

The sale of the 447-acre estate earlier this year to US golf resort operating firm Cliffs Legacy Club (CLC) prompted speculation over future plans for the estate.

Now, CLC representatives have confirmed a planning application has been lodged with the Highland Council.

Proposed plans for the estate are focused upon castle restoration and the construction of woodland retreats for visitors which will be situated next to the loch. Work is due to begin in October 2003, pending approval of the plans.

Plans also include 12 glass-fronted woodland retreats, featuring a kitchen, veranda and two bedrooms, and a main estate office with a licensed bar, wellbeing centre and grand hall. The restored castle would also provide guest accommodation.

According to the latest Department of Employment Returns figures, which are analysed by Visit Scotland, 18 per cent of Highland employment comes from tourism. The CLC development could potentially see £20m of investment and the creation of 50 jobs in the local area, which has been welcomed by Highlands tourism organisations.

Communications manager for the Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board, Casia Zajec, said: "Loch Ness is one of the world’s most famous tourism attractions anyway, but it would be excellent for both Highlands employment and the general economy if the Aldourie castle development is along the lines of Skibo Castle, attracting more high-spending visitors to the area."
