A family fun day has been staged by Liverpool City Council (LCC) to mark the completion of a £7m refurbishment of the city's Sefton Park.

Work commenced on the project in 2008, with the Heritage Lottery Fund contributing £4.8m towards the total cost. LCC provided the remainder of the funding. As part of the work, watercourses and rockeries have been overhauled and a new play area created, while there have also been improvements to paths and bridges.

The final stages of the scheme have seen a new boathouse kiosk created by the lake and a refurbishment of the café to increase its size. LCC cabinet member for the environment Tim Moore said: "The spectacular views, which were part of the original vision for the park, have been restored and the lake and watercourses massively improved."

Birse Civils was appointed by the council to undertake the work, with Anelays; Glendale Liverpool; LDA Design; Arup; Lloyd Evans Prichard; Mansell; and National Museums Liverpool Conservation Technologies also involved.
