Crown Limited - an Australian entertainment company with hotels and casinos in Melbourne, Perth and Macau - has chosen Wilkinson Eyre Architects (WEA) to design its proposed Crown Sydney Hotel Resort.

The AU$1bn (£600m, €710m, US$950m) resort is proposed for a site at Baranagaroo in Sydney Harbour.

According to Crown, it will consist of a six star, 350-room hotel, luxury spa and pool, casino as well as signature restaurants and other leisure facilities. The company added that the project would create over 1,400 new jobs once operational, and would seek to deliver indigenous employment programs for the hotel resort.

Commenting on its design, WEA said the key building’s form was derived to emulate three twisted petals taking inspiration from nature. It added the shape of the upper and intermediate levels of the tower - which is anticipated will be 250m or 820ft high - was designed to maximise views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

The project is subject to a number of government approvals. Late last year, the New South Wales government announced that the development had met its second stage of consideration in order to proceed. The three stages in the process are the initial submission and strategic assessment, the detailed proposal and the negotiation of the final binding offer.

The casino will not be able to operate before November 2019 as the city's current casino, Star in Darling Harbour, has an exclusivity agreement with the state government.

Crown Limited is run by James Packer, son of deceased media mogul, Kerry Packer. Since his father’s death, Packer moved away from his family’s traditional media businesses and focused on creating a worldwide gambling empire.
