New amphitheater planned for New York's Coney Island
A US$46.7m (£31.8,€35.9) amphitheater is to be built at the nine-acre Asser Levy Park in Brooklyn, New York, US, as part of the regeneration of Coney Island – a former resort and amusement park site.
Called Coney Center, the venue has been designed by New York-based Grimshaw Architects, and will be funded by the New York City Department of Design & Construction, Brooklyn Borough President's Office and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The scheme is designed to replace an existing 1980s bandstand and will feature 8,000 seats – 3,000 of which will be on the lawn area in front of the theatre, which will be removed in the winter months to create an extra 3,250sq m of park space. The entertainment centre will also feature a 60,000sq ft swooping roof fashioning strobing stage lights and a 40,000sq ft stage. The project is expected to be completed in 2011.
