The Peak opens in Stirling
The new indoor sports complex at the heart of the £27m Stirling Sports Village at Forthside has opened.
Funded by Stirling Council and sportscotland, The Peak features a 25m swimming pool, a Technogym-equipped fitness studio, a nine-court sports hall, a six-sheet ice rink and a 12m climbing wall. The village already boasts third generation outdoor football, rugby and hockey pitches. The Peak and Sports Village are an official training centre for the London 2012 Olympics, with talks underway to give it the same role during Glasgow's 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The village is expected to attract 500,000 visitors a year, with an anticipated spend of £1.8m and the creation of an additional 90 jobs within the area. Stewart Harris, chief executive of sportscotland said: “The whole Stirling Sports Village project, including the pitches which were completed in late 2007, is part of the Scottish Government’s National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy and received an investment of £2.5m through sportscotland. It is the first of the National and Regional facilities to be completed."
Tennis coach Judy Murray, added: “The Peak is a tremendous addition to the sporting environment in Stirling and I have been impressed with the way the complex has been developed and shaped to offer those who want to participate in sport the opportunity to do so at a level which suits their abilities.”
