14-year-old Briton dies at Thai waterpark
A British teenager has died at the Pattaya Water Park in Thailand.
Nathan Clark, 14, from Douglas on the Isle of Man, was killed on Friday after he was sucked into the pool’s pumping system while looking for his goggles.
The boy apparently lifted a grille at the bottom of a 1m deep pool to retrieve his goggles and was dragged under. His body was found by lifeguards in the engine room that powers the whirlpool.
The family of the boy allege that lifeguards did nothing to help after the alarm was raised, believing it to be a joke. It was reportedly 30 minutes later when lifeguards opened the pump room and found Clark’s body.
The Pattaya Daily News reported that police investigations have found that the grille was not secured, and that the boy could have easily lifted it.
The park has offered compensation to the family, but Jim Clark, the father, told The Guardian: “It’s not even something I want to think about at the moment. This is not about money.”
