2014 Commonwealth Games joy for Glasgow
Scottish sport has been celebrating on both sides of the world, according to the Telegraph, following Glasgow’s victory in the right to stage the 20th Commonwealth Games in 2014.
In Colombo, Sri Lanka, where Glasgow held off the Nigerian capital, Abuja, to win the Commonwealth Games Federation ballot by 47 votes to 24, Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, said: “We will make these Games the greatest sporting event our country has ever seen. They will be our chance to show the whole world the very best of Scotland.”
It will be the third time that the multi-sport event, which began life as the British Empire Games in 1930, has been staged in Scotland after Edinburgh was the host in 1970 and 1986.
In a further example of the bidding expertise established by London 2012, Louise Martin, of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland and chairwoman of the Glasgow bid, admitted that the city had won with a “charm offensive” aimed at the 71 voting delegates.
