A big adventure in Ratho
The Adventure Centre, a £16m sports project dedicated to the development and practice of adventure sports, is due to open in Ratho, Scotland, next spring.
Developed by keen climbers, Duncan McCallum, Rab Anderson and David Taylor, the will be home to the National Rock Climbing Centre of Scotland, boasting one of the largest climbing arenas in the world with 2,400sq m of artificial wall surfaces and more than 400sq m of bouldering and training. It will be home also to the National Judo Academy, housing the Commonwealth and Scottish Olympic team.
The centre will also feature the Adventure Sports Gym, to provide functional and affordable programmes catered to adventure sports such as skiers, climbers, mountain bikers and kayakers and will deliver ACENT training, the American Council on Exercise personal training certification to the UK fitness industry.
Other facilities include accommodation, a film auditorium, conference facilities and a restaurant, bar and café. The centre will also promote eco-tourism, encourage recycling and the protection of the local and immediate environment in accordance with independent environmental and wildlife surveys.
In development for 12 years and funded by private and public investment, the centre is located in Ratho quarry, approximately 10 minutes away from Edinburgh's international airport and an hours journey away from 3.5 million people.
