ACE confirms last Sustain grant awards
Nearly £6m will be shared by 13 arts organisations over the next two years after Arts Council England (ACE) announced its eighth and final round of Sustain funding.
London's Young Vic Theatre Company will net more than £1.2m - the largest share of funding, while English National Ballet has been handed more than £879,000. Leeds-based Opera North has received a grant of £800,000 and Northern Ballet Theatre - also in Leeds - has secured £735,000. London's Serpentine Gallery has been awarded £472,000.
Other successful applicants include: The Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre in Taunton, Somerset (£487,500); Arnolfini in Bristol (£367,500); Theatre Royal Stratford East (£290,000) and Bedford Creative Arts (£175,000). Theatre Royal in Wakefield (£158,000); Plymouth Arts Centre (£140,000); Bristol's Picture This (£100,000) and Spacex, Exeter, (£75,000) have also been awarded funding.
ACE established the Sustain fund in order to help support artists and organisations through the recession; by offsetting a decline in sponsorship and donations and maintaining artistic excellence. ACE chief executive Alan Davey said: "The fund has succeeded in helping 146 arts organisations to not only survive a major economic downturn, but to continue to take artistic risks and produce the sort of excellent work that audiences want to see.
"Now we must look ahead. Our experience with the Sustain programme has identified a need for the kind of support that builds resilience in the long term."
