Being involved at such an early stage of a major event is a fantastic opportunity, and one where we are able to demonstrate the full potential of our expertise
John Roberts, AFL director

International design practice AFL Architects have been commissioned by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to lead the creation of Turkey’s bid dossier for the UEFA Euro 2024.

As part of this role, the studio is examining the tournament readiness of seven existing stadia in the country, as well as planning the renovation of three further venues to ensure they meet international requirements and “can provide fans with world-class hospitality.”

They are also working on a wider development strategy “encompassing fan zones, transport, training venues and hotels, all designed to leave a sustainable, inclusive legacy for Turkey.”

AFL director John Roberts, said: “This partnership with the TFF is an exciting development for the practice. Being involved at such an early stage of a major event is a fantastic opportunity, and one where we are able to demonstrate the full potential of our expertise.”

One of the stadium’s that would be renovated should Turkey overcome Germany in its bid for Euro 2024, is the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, which AFL said would “symbolise the new home of Turkish football.”

They have revealed their striking design for the 92,000-capacity ground, enveloped by a white exoskeleton holding wind capture technology, allowing the stadium to generate energy from the windy hilltop site. Colourful cladding takes inspiration from historic Turkish hats and artwork, while a 360-video wall is integrated around the seating bowl to advance the venue’s multimedia potential.

The UEFA executive committee will meet on 27 September 2018 in Nyon, Switzerland to vote on the two received bids and announce the chosen tournament host.
