Abbey Stadium reveals £50m redevelopment
Abbey Stadium in Redditch, Worcestershire, is awaiting outline planning permission for a £50m redevelopment scheme which would see the 1950s sports hall transformed into a major leisure destination.
The sports and athletics complex – known locally as the stadium, though it does not actually have seating or standing areas for spectators – is to be redeveloped into a 500,000sq ft destination designed by Birmingham-based architects, Hing & Jones.
Plans for the new complex include an indoor snow and ice centre; health and fitness facilities; a multiplex cinema; an indoor and outdoor tennis centre; a 25m competition, teaching and leisure swimming pool complex; a multi-use sports hall and family entertainments such as ten pin bowling.
There will also be bar and restaurant outlets and a conference centre as well as potential planning for two hotels.
The development is being privately funded by Atlantic Beacon.
