Abu Dhabi announces 20-year development masterplan
Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) has unveiled the urban structure framework plan for the Shahama and Bahia region, located between Abu Dhabi and neighbouring emirate Dubai.
The Shahama and Bahia Revitalisation Master Plan is part of UPC’s Plan Capital 2030 and is the first area master plan unveiled by the council.
The master-planning area is divided into two separate planning areas; Coastal Bahia located on the coast and Bahia and Shahama intersected by highways.
The main components of the plan call for a robust open space framework, a clear neighbourhood retail centres approach, a neighbourhoods and communities revitalisation strategy, and a transportation framework.
The plans are based on five key themes – the creation of new town centres with transport hubs and new leisure and retail development; creation of vibrant, living communities with a strong sense of place relating to local culture; redefinition of coastal communities; new public transport systems; and sustainability through urban design.
Detailed plans are yet to be confirmed but leisure facilities will include cultural attractions and sports venues and facilities.
