Administrators tie up Great Leighs deal
A new buyer has been found for the Great Leighs racecourse near Colchester, Essex, after administrators secured an agreement with a consortium of local businessmen.
The consortium - led by Terry Chambers and Bill Gredley - is set to complete acquisition of the venue on 29 September, which first opened in April 2008 and was the first new racecourse to open in the UK since 1927. Carlton Siddle and Nick Edwards of business advisory firm Deloitte were appointed to take over the management of the racecourse in January after former owners Essex County Showground Group ran into financial difficulties.
It is now hoped that facilities can be established at the all-weather course with a view to resume racing events from 2011, subject to the venue receiving a racing licence. Siddle said: "This agreement has been a long time in the making. We wish the buyers every success in completing the acquisition of the course, and subsequently securing the return of racing to this excellent all weather track."
