All change in the coffee shop market
There are signs that Starbucks, which has 221 outlets in the UK, may be scaling back openings of regional coffee shops in favour of sites in London.
The company had planned to open 15 sites in cities like Birmingham and Oxford, but is understood to have withdrawn from several deals in recent weeks.
Starbucks may be concerned about a slowdown, which has been felt by other operators, including Coffee Republic, which has scaled down expansion.
McDonalds has also suggested a lack of long-term confidence in the 'coffee house' market, saying it is selling the Aroma group.
However, Caffe Nero, which has doubled its portfolio this year from 30 to 61 stores, seems bullish, in spite of losses of £2.75m. The company will step up expansion, with the possible acquisition of sites from Aroma and Madison.
Market research from Allegra Strategies indicates the coffee shop market could grow by 83 per cent in the next three years.
