American Revolution museum to be built in Philadelphia
A museum dedicated to the American Revolution is to be built in Philadelphia.
To be called the American Revolution Center, the museum will be located at 3rd and Chestnut Streets, a stone's throw away from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
The team behind the project - also named the American Revolution Center - acquired the site through a land exchange deal with the National Park Service, from which the centre received US$3.2m.
In exchange for the site, the National Park Service will receive a 78-acre parcel of private land owned by the centre within the boundary of Valley Forge National Historical Park.
Over the course of a century, The American Revolution Center and its predecessor, the Valley Forge Historical Society, assembled a collection of objects, art, manuscripts, and printed works from the period of the American Revolution.
The collection began with the 1909 purchase of General George Washington's marquee (sleeping tent and office) from Martha Washington's great-great-granddaughter, Mary Custis Lee.
