American health center names five 'fattest cities' in the USA
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, US has released a list of what it believes are the five fattest major cities in America - San Antonio, Gary, Jackson, Ft Wayne and Shreveport-Bossier, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Though this year was the first that the CDC has packaged its data by city, since 1985 it has, through its Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), tracked overweight as one of many health risk factors (smoking, sedentary lifestyle and high blood pressure are among the others). The bulk of the data comes from 185,000 phone interviews done in 55 cities and collected by state CDC offices.
The same 185,000-person survey that revealed how fat the nation was, also tracked binge drinking (more than five drinks in a sitting with the intention of getting drunk). The CDC found that, while about one in five Americans is overweight, one in four engaged in binge drinking. Details: www.cdc.gov
